The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins is a Melbourne institution. It began life as Alexander's Family Hotel in 1866 and after a few different owners and refurbishments it became the famous Savoy Plaza in 1951. The hotel played host to many of the international starts of the day, including Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Ava Gardner, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. The hotel's "Rainbow Room" featured the Southern Hemisphere's only glass dance floor.
The hotel is located opposite Southern Cross Railway Station in the heart of Melbourne's CBD and has seen a multi-million dollar renovation in 2018 to return it to its former glory.
You will love the spacious well-lit rooms with their high ceilings, and the retro feel bathrooms provide a great nod to the hotel's heritage.
The Alexander Bar's menu is reminiscent of the Prohibition era, with interesting cocktails and plenty of whiskey options on offer, as well as an extensive Champagne list.
