Archibald Prize 2020 Regional Tour

The Archibald Prize is a great excuse for an art-inspired getaway. If you missed seeing the Archibald Prize in Sydney in 2020 (hello covid) then your best bet is to catch the exhibition on its national tour kicking off in The Tweed in January.

The brilliant Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre is the first stop on the 2020 Archibald Prize Regional Tour which opens on 22 January.

Prestigious and controversial, the Archibald Prize is Australia's foremost portraiture prize. An open competition, the Archibald Prize is judged by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, while the popular People’s Choice Award is judged by gallery attendees.

"The tour is an opportunity to see all 55 finalists in the 2020 Archibald Prize, including the winning portrait of former professional Australian rules footballer, Adam Goodes, by artist Vincent Namatjira, the first Aboriginal artist to win the Prize in its 99-year history,” Tweed Regional Gallery Director Susi Muddiman OAM said.

"Other famous subjects include actor Magda Szubanski, chef Adam Liaw, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and Behrouz Boochani (painted by Lennox Head artist Angus McDonald)."

This year Angus McDonald was a clear winner of the People’s Choice with his oil on canvas work of Kurdish-Iranian writer, poet, filmmaker and journalist Behrouz Boochani depicting a strong, confident and peaceful man who survived a brutal ordeal and is now free.

Not to be missed, on Friday 12 February, join Archibald finalist and documentary filmmaker Angus McDonald in conversation with acclaimed journalist Kerry O'Brien for a special Sunset Session at the Gallery. Numbers are strictly limited, bookings essential.

Tweed Regional Gallery will host the 2020 Archibald Prize from 22 January until 7 March 2021. Finalist works in the Archibald Prize 2020 will then continue on a tour of regional New South Wales and Queensland at the following regional galleries:

19 March – 2 May 2021 – Cairns Art Gallery
14 May – 27 June 2021 – Griffith Regional Art Gallery
9 July – 22 August 2021 – Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery
3 September – 17 October 2021 – Shoalhaven Regional Gallery
