Brunswick Heads Motel Review

Of all the hotels we visited last year, there is only one we made a return visit to – Brunswick Heads Motel.

I'll admit it doesn't sound as glamorous as some of the other establishments you'll find on alluxia, however don't be put off by the "motel" moniker. What this "Motel" offers is impressive service, cool rooms and incredible poolside breakfast set in the relaxed seaside town of Brunswick Heads.

While many flock to Byron Bay for it's popular beaches and bars, if you want to experience the Byron of yesteryear, head 20 minutes north to Brunswick Heads for some retro-style beach town nostalgia. Don't be fooled by the laid-back locals and slower pace of life; this town is punching above its weight in the foodie stakes, with a plethora of great dining spots including the award-winning Fleet.

Fleet is a destination restaurant, a small 'blink and you miss it' bar seating just 14 guests. Given its reputation and calibre of food, the restaurant is in high demand with a waitlist up to 3 months in advance. Our hot tip; secure your reservation at Fleet first before booking your holiday in Bruns.

While Brunswick Heads Motel's façade has had a full makeover, there is no hiding the motel style setup, think long row of rooms and parking out the front, but that's where the similarities end. You'll receive the warmest of welcomes and wait...I'm being escorted to my room and there's a welcome note and gourmet chocolates on arrival? This level of service is all due to the powerhouse team of Managers Emma Alcorn and Nick Johns, whose 5 star island resort background has been transplanted to this little coastal gem.

Inside, the basic motel room has been transformed into a tropical oasis with white gleaming walls and furnishings with a splash of colour from the tropical feature wall, palm tree print cushions and Tommy Bahama amenities. The bedding is of a superior quality so you're guaranteed a great night's sleep and with Smart TV and Netflix, you'll want to laze in bed all day.

But rise and shine you must, as the complimentary breakfast is not be missed! When you think free motel breakfast, you think square little packets of cereal and instant coffee, but that's a far cry from the gourmet offering served at Brunswick Heads Motel. Choose from a delicious selection of breakfast items such as Brookfarm Muesli, Sol Organic Breads or new items to the menu such as Sol Breads organic banana bread, Pepe Saya mascarpone, orange and cacau crumble or Byron Bay ham, Norco cheese, toasted sourdough, piccalilli on the side. All enjoyed poolside or delivered to your room with a side of Byron Bay Bun espresso coffee or Byron Bay Tea.

The motel is fully licensed now too, so you can enjoy a beverage poolside in one of the shady cabanas and the minibar is fully stocked with quality, premium local brands. Other generous inclusions are free wifi, and complimentary hire of Stand Up Paddle Boards and Bondi Cruiser Bikes to explore Bruns.

Heading out to the beach, Nick stops me and shares some local advice by suggesting the gentle waters of Torakina Beach. He's right, it's just perfect; a small beach fringed by bushland and protected by rock walls with shady trees to laze under and calm waters to swim in. It's idyllic.

After some fun in the sun it's time to explore the town. It's a great spot to wander, with a selection of shops to browse including Mimi & Flo for some coastal boho style, Sunshine Trader for homewares and local artisan products and Fabulous Mrs Fox for something more eclectic. Afterwards, head to the iconic Hotel Brunswick; the real heartbeat of Bruns this pub is popular with both locals and visitors alike. It's more than just your typical country pub, located in the town centre it has a sunny beer garden with live music and is the perfect spot for a Sunday session.

Brunswick Heads is a nostalgic retro-style beach town worth exploring. With impressive dining, great beaches and a laid-back attitude, it's the ideal coastal getaway. A stay at Brunswick Heads Motel is a luxe for less experience that will have you coming back time and time again.
