Getaway to Ridgemill Escape

Before heading on my road trip to the Granite Belt, most people I mentioned the pending trip to fell into two camps – either they luuurved the Granite Belt or simply hadn’t heard of it. That’s it secret, the Granite Belt is a real hidden gem, where you’ll discover fresh local produce, excellent wine, divine dining, country hospitality and surprisingly great value accommodation compared to more established tourism wine regions.

Just 2 ½ hours from Brisbane it’s the perfect romantic getaway, wine weekend or group getaway with friends.

THE LOOK

Arriving at Ridgemill Escape in the late afternoon, I’m welcomed by a bottle of Ridgemill Estate Verdelho and cheese platter to enjoy while watching the sunset over the vines stretching out in front of the cabins.

THE SCENE

Immerse yourself in country hospitality, by starting with an epic apple pie from Sutton’s, reportedly holding a generous 22 apples per pie! With stomach’s lined, you’re ready for some first rate wine tasting. We suggest stopping by Symphony Hill, Tobin Wines, Ballandean Estate and finishing with Ridgemill Estate. It’s just a short drive to restaurants in Stanthorpe or venture a little further to Ballandean to savour the delights of Barrell Room & The Vineyard Cafe. Plan your trip around the Apple & Grape Festival or Elevated Taste both smashing events centred around fresh produce of the region.

THE ROOM

As you drive toward the Ridgemill Estate cellar door, there are sweeping vines on your left and a cute row of four studio style cabins on your right. Well designed in contemporary style the studio cleverly separates the room with a large lounge facing the cosy fireplace, perfect for romantic winter getaways. There’s a small table & chair set inside so you can choose to enjoy breakfast here or alfresco after you’ve cooked up a storm in the kitchenette from the breakfast provisions including bacon, eggs accompanied by Sutton’s Apple Juice.

The king size bed is perched prominently in the room and you’ll enjoy a great night’s sleep on the quiet vineyard. There is air-conditioning and ceiling fans, lots of windows for ventilation so you’ll be cool in summer or warm in winter.

The modern bathroom has a large shower, good hairdryer and plenty of amenities.

THE SERVICE

Cheerful service from the friendly cellar door co-ordinator, Jill and full of character wine maker, Peter provides an extra warm welcome. You check in at cellar door or simply make arrangements with Jill if you’re checking in after hours. Ridgemill Estate Cellar door is open Friday-Monday from 10am to 5pm, Sunday from 10am to 3pm and at other times by prior arrangement and guided walks for the vineyard can also be arranged.

THE WINE

Ridgemill Estate was the first Queensland wine to win an international gold medal for it’s Chardonnay and after reshaping the vineyard in 2005 they also have plantings of Tempranillo, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Saperavi, Shiraz, Verdelho and Viognier and are included in the Granite Belt Strange Bird alternative wine trail. The wines are exceedingly well priced and guests receive a 10% discount when they stay at Ridgemill Escape.
