We asked Lisa Maclaren, Resort Manager at Smiths Beach Resort to share his insider tips on what she loves about Margaret River!

alluxia: What do you love most about relaxing in Margaret River?

Lisa: Margaret River really is quite an idyllic part of Australia. Not only does it have beautiful countryside, tall forests and some of the whitest beaches in Australia, awesome surf, a fantastic coastal walk and even whales cruising by, the region also produces great food, amazing wines the best boutique beers – what more can you ask for?

The restaurant that best shows off your region...

I think the restaurant at Cullen’s (winery) best represents the variety and style of the region. It’s family-owned and operates on bio-dynamic principals which I think captures the alternative lifestyle of the region. It has a great earthy feel, views out over the vines and it offer a casual yet stylish dining experience which encapsulates the way the region attracts people from all walks of life and brings them together.

When friends are in town I take them for a drink at...

Being surrounded by over 160 wineries there are plenty of options but we always end up at Colonial Brewery, a funky boutique brewery with a fantastic range of beers brewed on site, entertainment on weekends, good pizzas and great laid-back style. A big playground to keep kids entertained too.

Couples wanting a romantic dinner for two should consider...

The ultra-modern, arty, sexy style of Studio Bistro restaurant. The setting is delightful, the ever-changing menu amazing and the service is excellent and unpretentious.

The best breakfast spot is...

Right here! Lamont’s Gourmet Deli at Smiths Beach has great coffee and teas, fresh baked bread and pastries, and a tempting breakfast menu and is the best spot to start the day before heading out and exploring the region or hitting the beach.

The best coffee can be found at...

The first coffee of the day is always the best to me so it’s hard to go past Lamont’s, but great coffee can also be found at The White Elephant Café at Gnarabup, right on the beach and the perfect spot to watch the surf.

For the perfect gift or momento, head to...

One of the local art galleries dotted around Yallingup. This region has attracted lots of artists over the years and there is quite a variety of little places to explore.

The best markets can be explored at...

Every Saturday in summer, and second weekend in Winter, the Margaret River fresh produce markets are held in the old Community Centre in the township. Even if you don’t want to buy anything, these markets are worth a visit.

For great art & culture, visit...

Without a doubt one of the most memorable cultural performances you’ll ever experience – Dreamtime stories accompanied by didgeridoo inside Ngilgi Cave with Josh from Koomal Dreaming tours. A must do.

The best free activity in the region is...

Watching the fantastic West Coast sunsets over the ocean. Every night is different but always spectacular.

If it's raining...

Grab your book, a magazine or a game, find a winery with a good restaurant and an open fire (some even have lounge areas), and spend the afternoon relaxing, sipping wine (or coffee), nibbling on delicious treats and enjoying the view – there’s no need to feel guilty.

What's the "Must See" attraction in your region...

Boranup Forest – to me this is one of the most magical places in the region and a scenic 45 45 minute drive from Smiths Beach. There’s also a great little café and gallery at Boranup and definitely worth popping in to.

Our regions best kept secret...

Hamelin Bay, a 15 minute drive further south of Boranup, is not only a beautiful beach but home to friendly stingrays that can be fed by hand in the shallow water. You have to be lucky to see them (mostly during fine weather) but the experience is amazing.
