THE LOOK

When you arrive at Thala Beach Lodge you’re greeted with a fruity concoction in a tall glass, decorated with a pineapple wedge, as your luggage is whisked away allowing you to take a moment after travelling to breath deep and relax - you’ve arrived at your destination so let the holiday begin!  Thala Beach Lodge is set on 60 hectares, with bungalows scattered along the landscape, leading to the main reception where ceiling fans languidly swirl at Osprey restaurant. It’s timeless and reminiscent of Dirty Dancing & I love it.

THE SCENE

It’s a short drive to Port Douglas’ main street where you’re spoilt for choice with restaurants, bars and shopping. The tour desk can arrange day trips to Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation and beyond.  Although once you’ve arrived at Thala, with its private beach, activities & dining there’s really no reason to leave. Free activities included in your stay include guided nature and bird walks, join the coconut odyssey tour to drink and eat the local specialty or go star-gazing. For a fee there are yoga classes, spa treatments, turtle watching from sea kayaks or order a gourmet hamper for a romantic beach picnic.

THE ROOM

Approaching the villa, golden lights sparkle from within providing a warm welcome with louvred windows open letting in the sea breezes. The room is like a luxurious beach shack. Timber floors, wicker furniture, natural décor & eco friendly aspects combine with modern conveniences for the perfect beach holiday. Thoughtful touches such as candles in the bathroom show Thala know their audience, with many couples descending for a romantic getaway.

THE SERVICE

Entering reception you’re welcomed so warmly and at all times throughout our stay everyone we encounter are so relaxed and delightful you’d swear they’re on holidays too! Staff take their time to chat, forming genuine connections with their guests, imparting tips and local knowledge that has you coming back for more.

THE FOOD

With a view overlooking the rainforest canopy and ocean unimpeded by panes of glass, you feel back to nature at Ospreys. Local, seasonal produce feature on the modern menu and I couldn’t go past the milk-fed veal tenderloin rolled with prosciutto served medium rare with marrow fat kipfler potatoes, green beans, artichoke puree and garlic jus – washed down with a Wirra Wirra Scrubby Rise varietal with a tropical downpour as the perfect accompaniment.
