Here at alluxia, we are addicted to Instagram. While we follow a lot of travel and foodie types one of our favourite people to follow is artist Vincent Fantauzzo. Fantauzzo is an Australian painter renowned for his portrait work including the 2008 Archibald Portrait Prize of the late Heath Ledger, which won him the runner-up and the People’s Choice award as well as last year’s entry of his partner Asher Keddie.

Following Vincent enabled us to follow his creative process in completing this magnificent artwork of his son Luca which is his entry in this year’s Archibald Prize. This behind the scenes sneak peek has certainly inspired us to visit this year’s Archibald Prize in Sydney.

The Archibald Prize is awarded annually to the best portrait painted by any artist resident in Australasia. The winner is judged by the trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW, however entries are also eligible to win the Packing Room Prize chosen by gallery staff, who unpack and hang the entries and the People’s Choice, voted by the public.

Fiona Lowry has been awarded the 2014 Archibald Prize for her portrait of famed Killara architect Penelope Seidler while Tim Storrier has been awarded the Packing Room Prize with his work The Member, Dr Sir Leslie Colin Patterson KCB AO.

Visit the exhibition and vote for your favourite portrait in the People’s Choice Award, with the winner announced on Thursday 11 September.

While visiting this important exhibition, make time for lunch at Matt Moran and Peter Sullivan’s new venture, Morsul at the Gallery. The Café menu includes items such as mushroom with kale and goats cheese jaffle for just $10 or citrus cured salmon salad with cos, watercress and gravlax dressing at $16, making it a healthy, fresh, quality choice for gallery visitors. In addition, Restaurant at the Gallery takes it up a notch with impeccable modern Australian fare matched with exceptional service and stunning views.

The Archibald Prize opens on Saturday 19 July at the Art Gallery of NSW until Sunday 28 September 2014. Buy tickets from Qtix.
