Hot New Hotel Openings in 2016

The Australian hotel market is set to expand dramatically with a host of new hotel openings to look forward to in 2016.

Here are details of the most anticipated hot new hotel openings in 2016:

Elements of Byron Resort & Spa, Byron Bay
Elements of Byron is a luxury resort opening in February 2016 with 103 private beach villas dotted amidst 22 hectares of absolute beachfront paradise. The welcoming main pavilion houses reception, restaurant & bar, spa and conference facilities cascading through to the lagoon pool. We can't wait to luxuriate poolside in one of the hanging sun beds this summer!

Macq01, Hobart
The Federal Group is set to operate a 113-room luxury hotel on Hobart's waterfront as part of a $35 redevelopment of the Macquarie Wharf Shed making it an exciting extension to Federal Group's successful Henry Jones Art Hotel. Macq01 is due to open late 2016/early 2017.

Emporium Hotel South Bank, Brisbane
Fans of Emporium Hotel Fortitude Valley can expect the same level of style and service when the group launches its new five-star hotel in South Bank complete with concierge, day spa and 24/7 room service. The 144 suite hotel is part of a $590 million development with plans that include an infinity pool and sky deck overlooking the city due to open 2016.

QT, Melbourne
Following the launch of QT Bondi in December 2015, QT Hotels is set to grow their portfolio further with the opening of the QT Melbourne. Transforming a historic Russell Street address in signature QT style, QT Melbourne arriving late 2016.

The Johnson, Brisbane
We've already revealed here that Brisbane's first Art Series Hotel is set to open in June 2016 in Spring Hill and honouring Australian artist Michael Johnson. The $155 million development will combine residential apartments with approximately 100 guest suites.

The Guest House, Hunter Valley
Spicers Retreats quietly acquired Peppers Guest House recently and the retreat will undergo a Spicers transformation to create the relaxed luxury for which the brand is known. With 48 rooms, a 6 bedroom cottage and conference and event space, on-site restaurant and more, we can't wait to watch the transformation. Spicers Sangoma Retreat in the Blue Mountains is also undergoing a refurbishment and new addition Spicers Victoria Court in Sydney's Potts Point will open in 2017.

Primus Hotel, Sydney
Primus Hotel quietly opened its doors on 23 December 2015 ahead of its official launch this month. The new 5 star hotel is housed in the former Sydney Water Board head office with the building faithfully and intricately restored to its former glory. We inspected the hotel last week and can report the rooms are beautifully appointed and feature bespoke furniture making a unique setting. Highlights will be the restaurant, helmed by Head Chef Ryan Hong and the rooftop pool and bar, exclusive to hotel guests.

Lester Hotel, Adelaide
The $50 million Lester Hotel to be developed by the Lester Group of Companies is to be operated by Lancemore Group under a franchise agreement with Choice Hotels under their premium hotel brand, the Ascend Hotel Collection. The 240-room hotel is expected to be completed by September 2016.

Other notable mentions of the chain variety are...

Peppers Docklands opened on January 19 featuring 87 hotel rooms plus residential apartments. Sydney will gain its first Aloft-branded hotel in November 2016 with the opening of the 136 room Aloft Sydney Pitt Street managed by Starwood.

Brisbane, so hot right now with a host of new openings, including Richmont by Mantra a 110- room boutique hotel scheduled to open in Spring Hill mid-year. Rydges RNA Showgrounds will have 208 rooms opening in 2016 in Fortitude Valley. Pullman Brisbane Airport; Brisbane Airport's first 5 star hotel is due to open late 2016. Icon at Northshore Hamilton in Brisbane is a $650 million project, which will include a 227-room hotel with premium function and recreation facilities, but no word yet on the hotel management and opening date. Plus there will be a W Hotel in Brisbane set to open in 2017 and we'll be eagerly watching the re-development of the Howard Smith Wharves precinct in Brisbane with another Art Series boutique hotel opening in 2017!
